How Professional Songwriters Decide: Lyric or Melody First?
Lyric or Melody First? The Real Answer for Songwriters
When you write a song, one question always comes up:
Do you start with the lyric or the melody?
Answer is: Sometimes lyric, sometimes melody, and sometimes both. And then, sometimes the lyric changes and sometimes the melody changes, and sometimes they both change at the same time. Sometimes the melody leads to a different song idea. Sometimes the lyric changes to a different subject than when it first appeared. Sometimes the melody influences the lyric to change, and sometimes the lyric influences the melody to change.
That’s not a vague answer. It’s actually how songwriting works.
You might start with a line—something that feels like it means something.
Then a melody shows up.
Or you might be at the piano and a melody comes first.
Now you need words to match it.
And just when you think you know what the song is…
it changes.
Sometimes the melody leads you in a completely different direction.
Sometimes the lyric shifts into something you didn’t expect.
Sometimes they influence each other back and forth until you’re not even sure which came first anymore.
That’s not a problem—that’s the process.
People like to ask, “Which comes first?”
It’s a fair question. But it assumes there’s a fixed answer.
There isn’t.
Songs aren’t solid things at the beginning.
They show up as fragments—ideas, sounds, moments.
Your job is to shape them into something complete.
Every song comes together differently.
Some happen quickly.
Some take time.
Some turn into something completely different than where they started.
And once the song lands, it takes on a life of its own.
Maybe it becomes a hit song heard by a world audience.
Maybe it just stays with you and gives you the joy that you created it.
Both matter.
So if you’re trying to decide where to start—
start wherever something shows up.
Then listen to where it wants to go.
Songs are intangible. They are amorphous blobs that need to be molded into a shape. Every song emerges in its own way; there are no rules. Once the song comes out, it takes on a life of its own, becomes a big hit and pays the rent for your beach house or simply finds a place in your heart.. Please feel free to chime in and send your questions.
Understanding the Creative Dilemma: Lyric or Melody First?
When you embark on the journey of songwriting, one of the most fundamental—and often hotly debated—questions arises: Should you start with the lyric or the melody? This creative crossroads is not just a matter of personal preference; it can shape the entire trajectory of your song, influence your workflow, and even impact your ability to monetize your music. As a music professional, music educator, or singer songwriter seeking to refine ones craft and expand ones portfolio, understanding how established composers and professional songwriters approach this decision is essential for both artistic growth and commercial success.
Whether you are writing for musical theater, opera, pop, R&B, hip hop, or jazz, the decision to prioritize lyric or melody first will affect everything from your creative process to your rights management and licensing strategies.
If you ever want to share how you start, I’d love to hear it.
