The Practical Truth About Writing More Songs To Build Real Skill

How Many Songs Should I Write?

Songwriters,

The best way to become a better songwriter is simple: write more songs. That's not to negate my favorite saying, "The art of writing is rewriting." Both ideas are essential to the songwriting process.

Too many songwriters wait for inspiration. Successful songwriting comes from building a writing habit. Not every song will be your best, but every song teaches you something. Every lyric, melody, and chorus helps you become a stronger songwriter.

Work a song until you can't take it any further. Then let it rest. Some songs need weeks, months, or even years before they reveal what they're missing. Fresh ears often solve problems that endless rewriting can't. In the meantime, keep writing new songs.

The secret to better songwriting isn't waiting for inspiration. It's developing your songwriting craft one song at a time.

Keep writing. What you learn from the song you are writing you bring to the next song you write. Cumulative process. And, the art of writing is rewriting!
